Today we have massive fleets of simple telemetry devices in a typical IoT deployment. These devices are instructed to collect data and with zero or no pre-processing this data is siphoned to a cloud location and poured into data lakes. Massive systems operate on this data to come up with some intelligence that is useful either for network itself or other services.

There is a shift coming.

On device decision making is showing some signs in networks. The autonomous endpoints is a shift that is coming in for IoT systems. End-point can make real-time decisions e.g. maintenance predictive service quality management, video analytics and a million other use cases.

We do not require a constant contact with cloud, it does not have to ship massive amount of data, reducing network bandwidth load. Reducing latency. This is music to the ears of Systems with tight latency requirements
